What Is an API?

An application programming interface, or API, is a secure electronic connection that allows two computer systems to exchange information.

Health care APIs can help you access your health information, allow your providers to receive information needed for your care, and help your information follow you when you change health plans.

Information shared through an API may include certain:

  • Claims and health care visits
  • Clinical information
  • Prior authorization information
  • Provider and health plan information

Protecting Your Information When Using an App

Before allowing an app to access your health information, read the app’s privacy policy. Make sure you understand:

  • What information the app will collect
  • How the app will use your information
  • Whether the app will sell or share your information
  • How the app protects your information
  • How you can stop the app from accessing your information
  • How you can ask the app to delete your information
  • How you can file a complaint

Do not use an app that does not have an easy-to-understand privacy policy.

Many third-party health apps are not covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, commonly called HIPAA. Once NHP sends your information to an app at your request, the app’s privacy policy may control how the information is used and protected. The Federal Trade Commission may oversee apps that are not covered by HIPAA.

Reporting a Privacy Concern

Contact NHP if you believe your information was accessed or shared improperly:

Phone: 800-541-6870, toll-free
Email: nhpmembersupport@nhpllc.org

You may also file a complaint with:

Provider Access API

The Provider Access API allows NHP to electronically share certain health information with participating providers who have a treatment relationship with you.

Sharing this information may help your providers:

  • Better understand your health history
  • Coordinate your care
  • Complete prior authorizations
  • Prevent delays or disruptions in care
  • Make informed decisions about your treatment

Your information is made available only to providers NHP has identified as having a treatment relationship with you. Privacy and security protections apply to this exchange.

Your Right to Opt Out

Unless you opt out, NHP may make certain health information available to participating providers through the Provider Access API.

You may opt out at any time. Your opt-out choice applies to all providers receiving your information through the Provider Access API. It does not apply to only one individual provider.

To opt out, contact NHP:

Phone: 800-541-6870, toll-free
Email: nhpmembersupport@nhpllc.org

Please tell NHP that you want to opt out of the Provider Access API.

Changing Your Choice

You may change your mind and opt back in at any time. Call or email NHP using the contact information above and tell NHP that you want to resume Provider Access API data sharing.

Opting out of the Provider Access API does not prevent your information from being shared when HIPAA, state law, or another applicable law permits or requires the information to be shared for your treatment or other authorized purposes.

Payer-to-Payer API

The Payer-to-Payer API allows health information to be exchanged between health plans when you:

  • Change from one health plan to another, or
  • Have coverage through two or more health plans at the same time

Sharing information between health plans may help:

  • Create a more complete health record
  • Improve care coordination
  • Reduce disruptions when your coverage changes
  • Support continuity of care
  • Coordinate coverage between your health plans

Your Information Is Not Shared Automatically

You must choose to opt in before NHP requests your information from a previous health plan or exchanges information with another current health plan through this API.

To opt in, contact NHP:

Phone: 800-541-6870, toll-free
Email: nhpmembersupport@nhpllc.org

Please tell NHP that you want to opt in to the Payer-to-Payer API. NHP may ask you to provide information about your previous or current health plans so the correct plans can be identified.

When you opt in:

  • NHP may request information from your previous health plan.
  • NHP may exchange information with other health plans that currently cover you.
  • Information may be exchanged with concurrent health plans at least every three months while you remain enrolled with both plans.
  • Information will not be exchanged through this API with a health plan that does not cover you.

CMS requires an affirmative opt-in for payer-to-payer exchange. For concurrent coverage, data must be requested at least quarterly after the member has opted in and the payer has sufficient identifying information.

Withdrawing Your Permission

You may withdraw your permission at any time.

Call 800-541-6870 or email nhpmembersupport@nhpllc.org and tell NHP that you want to stop Payer-to-Payer API data sharing.

Withdrawing permission will stop future exchanges through this API. It does not remove information that was already received and added to your health plan record. Information may still be exchanged when permitted or required under another law.

Text and Telephone Communications

NHP may send informational and health care-related text messages to members who have agreed to receive them. Messages may include:

  • Appointment reminders
  • Care coordination information
  • Benefit and program updates
  • Wellness and preventive care information
  • Health education
  • Member surveys
  • Gaps-in-care notifications

Message frequency may vary. Message and data rates may apply.

Stopping Text Messages

Reply STOP to any NHP text message to stop receiving messages through that texting program. You may receive one final message confirming that you have been unsubscribed.

Reply HELP for assistance.

Replying STOP only stops text messages. It does not opt you out of the Provider Access API or withdraw your Payer-to-Payer API permission. To change an API data-sharing choice, you must call or email NHP.

Wireless carriers are not responsible for delayed or undelivered messages.

NHP may use contracted communication platforms and service providers to send messages on its behalf. These organizations are required to protect member information and may only use it to perform services for NHP.

Mobile information, text-message consent records, and related information will not be sold or shared with third parties or affiliates for their independent marketing or promotional purposes.
